DISTRICT REVIEWS GRAD RULES; STUDENTS MAY GET THREE-YEAR OPTION

SANTA CLARITA - The Hart school board will consider on Wednesdaywhether to revise its graduation requirements to give students theoption of finishing high school in three years rather than four.

"Those students who want to can go on to college at an earliertime and it would be a small help for overcrowding if a number ofstudents were to adopt the option," said Glenda Bona, a member ofthe William S. Hart Union High School District advisory committee."This is to give students another option."

Schools will allow students to take summer school and onlineclasses to complete courses required for graduation.

`'We think that the wave of the future is more Internet-basededucation, and this sets up a vehicle where students can use theInternet to get some of those last credits and finish schoolearlier," Bona said.

The district does not anticipate a large number of studentsopting for the accelerated high school program, especially sincerecords indicate about 85 percent of Hart students participate inextracurricular activities.

"We recognize it's not for a vast majority of the students," Bonasaid. "Some kids want and need four years to finish high school. This is for those who want to move faster and move on."

If the board approves the revised graduation regulations, 10th-and 11th-graders could apply for early graduation after completingthe regular graduation check with a counselor in the spring of 10thor 11th grade.
