WA: WA public unis to charge amenities fees

West Australian public universities can now charge students a levy for services andamenities next year following legislation passed overnight.

The bill overturns 1994 state legislation allowing students to choose whether to paysuch fees by joining student guilds at public universities.

West Australian Minister for Education ALAN CARPENTER says the new system will createfunds to restore essential campus services which have been reduced since 1994.

The move brings West Australian public universities into line with those in other statesand has been welcomed by student guilds.
