Fed: Number of kids in detention rises
A report's found the number of children in immigration detention has now reached 188.
A Just Australia's monthly detention bulletin says the 188 children now in detention
is an increase of five, from 183, in November.
Ninety-three of the 188 children are held on the Pacific island of Nauru while the
other 95 are in detention centres in Australia or on Christmas Island.
The children on Nauru make up almost a third of the 284 people in detention on the island.
A Just Australia says only 19 children are in residential housing projects, despite
former immigration minister PHILIP RUDDOCK announcing a broadening of the project a year
ago.
Immigration Minister AMANDA VANSTONE says the government has already put in place more
appropriate arrangements for women and children.
