OLY: Olympic athletes names inscribed in stone at Homebush
SYDNEY, Aug 24 AAP - The autographs of Australian Olympic legends Herb Elliott, Betty
Cuthbert and Dawn Fraser have been incorporated in a new $10 million water fountain project in
the Games precinct at the Homebush Bay.
The fountain at Fig Grove, located between Stadium Australia and the Sydney International
Aquatic Centre, consists of twin three metre high jets of water that arch over two 90 metre
long pathways.
Four nearby tiers of granite seating, shaded by 10 mature Moreton Bay Fig Trees, have 30
autographs of Olympic legends and modern heroes such as Susie O'Neill and Cathy Freeman
incorporated into them.
The autographs have been lifted from a book belonging to Australian Olympic Historian Harry
Gordon.
"During warmer weather people can even walk under the water jets and be cooled down and
refreshed by the water spray and at night enjoy the illuminated fountains," Olympics Minister
Michael Knight said at the official opening today.
Up to twelve public art projects are planned for Sydney's Olympic precincts at Homebush Bay
and Western Sydney.
